How can I extend Wi-Fi to the other side of my house?

Wi-Fi is never as fast, and never as reliable, as a wired internet connection...the best answer is HomePlug, which is what I use. HomePlug was developed to send broadband internet traffic across a home’s – or an office’s – mains electricity cables. The system is overseen by the HomePlug Alliance, which is much like the Wi-Fi Alliance that looks after Wi-Fi. The first HomePlugs were shipped in 2001, and the latest versions are HomePlug AV (2005) and AV2 (2012). The latest AV2 HomePlugs offer MIMO (multiple input multiple output) operation instead of SISO (single input single output). This should provide much better throughput.

D-Link P701AV Powerline AV2 2000 Kit Review

The D-Link P701AV is my first AV2 2000 kit and the first powerline kit I have tested in a while. With this new technology, D-Link is pushing 2000 Mbps utilizing AV2 MIMO technology while additional features of this package include pass-through AC outlets with noise filters for cleaner transmission along with each adapter housing a gigabit Ethernet connection on the bottom. As far as I know, this kit is the first I have tested that uses MIMO which widens the data throughput highway so these adapters can support Ultra HD media streaming, online gaming, and quick file transfers.

PowerLine AV2 2000 Gigabit Passthrough starter kit adds an outlet

WiFi doesn't always work when it comes to getting connectivity for all your computers and gadgets around your home. The problem is that some areas can be hard to reach or unreachable depending on interferences in and around the home or business. In instances where WiFi isn't cutting it for some reason, a good alternative is power line networking and D-Link has a new PowerLine AV2 2000 Gigabit Passthrough Starter Kit that is good for up to 2000Mbps speeds.

Review: TP-LINK AV1200 Gigabit Passthrough Powerline AC Wi-Fi Kit (TL-WPA8630P)

TP-LINK has taken their previous product and added Wi-Fi support, extending both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. It’s a natural progression ensuring you have fewer devices plugged in around the home. Matched with the strong performance of the previous revision these new devices sounds like a perfect match. They promise combined speeds of up to 1200 Mbps (these theoretical speeds are to be taken with a pinch of salt) but with MIMO support, taking advantage of all three cables within your homes electrical wiring. The aim is to keep wired speeds to a maximum, while extending your Wi-Fi signal to the parts of the home that need it most.

6 Easy Ways To Speed Up Your Awful Wi-Fi Network

Sometimes problems with a home Wi-Fi network has nothing to do with the network and everything to do with the home — it’s too big. In that case, says Miller, the best option is to use a Powerline to extend your wireless network’s range. A powerline is a device that runs your data through your home’s electrical wiring. You simply plug one powerline into an electrical outlet and connect it to a nearby Internet modem or router via ethernet cable. Then plug another powerline into an electrical outlet in an area of your home where the Wi-Fi signal is poor. You’ll also need to connect that powerline to another Wi-Fi router via ethernet cable. The result should be two strong networks blanketing your home in Internet.

Review: TP-Link AV500 Powerline ac Wi-Fi Kit

Powerline has been a go-to solution for users whose needs extend beyond WiFi. Usually connected to the router at one end via Ethernet and then spreading data usage by riding over the electricity and through plugs on the other, Powerline gives wired-like performance without the clutter associated with running multiple cables around the home.

What is Powerline networking? And how fast is it versus Wi-Fi?

Powerline networking, as its name implies, uses your existing electrical power cabling to transmit digital data. In this case, it is used to transfer your networking data. This can essentially be thought of as acting like a wired network, where your electrical wiring replaces a large segment of unsightly Ethernet cable.
