Orlando, Fla., August 6, 2009 - Intellon Corporation
), a leading provider of HomePlug®-compatible integrated circuits (ICs) for home networking, networked entertainment, Ethernet-over-Coax (EoC) and smart grid applications, announced today that Grid Net, a leading provider of policy-based network management system software and communications reference designs for the utility Smart Grid, is using Intellon's INT6400
chipset in its advanced communications technology for smart electricity meters.
Grid Net's technology "talks" upstream to utility enterprise applications and systems via 4G WiMAX and downstream to smart appliances in the home using Intellon's reliable, standards-based HomePlug AV technology. This technology delivers secure and reliable broadband networking capability to the HAN, and provides the utility and service providers with a new digital point of sale interface to their customers. This new energy management interface offers a standards-based, secure network and application-level interface that can connect various home appliances, pool pumps, photovoltaic systems, hybrid vehicles, programmable communicating thermostats (PCTs) and customer display terminals, laptops, PDAs, iPhones, and the like. The Intellon chipset's extended operating temperature range versions ensure performance for outdoor installations. Broadband networking of such devices allows home owners to monitor energy usage and take part in time-of-day pricing programs that offer incentives to home owners who minimize energy consumption at peak demand hours by shifting operation to off-peak hours.
"Intellon's HomePlug AV powerline solutions provide reliable communications from smart meters into home area networks," said Ray Bell, president of Grid Net. "Most important, interoperability with the emerging IEEE 1901 standard will ensure cost-effective, future-proof smart meter installations."
"Advanced broadband metering solutions are important to the build-out of the U.S. smart grid and we're pleased to be a part of Grid Net's smart meter communications solutions," said Rick Furtney, president and COO of Intellon Corporation. "Our INT6400 is a third generation HomePlug AV-based solution and the only one with the all-important industrial temperature range vital to supporting smart grid applications."
Intellon is the global sales leader in producing HomePlug-compatible powerline communications ICs, with over 30 million shipped to date. Intellon's HomePlug-based ICs are used by 50 service providers in Asia, Europe and the Americas for a variety of applications including Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), movies on demand and Internet and Wi-Fi extension. They are also used in consumer products from leading manufacturers and available at major retailers.
The INT6400 is Intellon's most advanced IC. It has the lowest power consumption of any 200 Mbps PHY-rate HomePlug AV-class IC, supports European 2011 Code of Conduct requirements for adapters and embedded products and delivers higher TCP throughput and more customer programmability options (such as programmable LEDs, push buttons and diagnostics), as well as improved Quality of Service (QoS).
