Intellon HomePlug ICs Enable New Linksys by Cisco Powerline Product Portfolio
- New Powerline AV and Powerline Turbo home networking products offer space-saving design and enhanced connectivity.
Orlando, Fla., October 28, 2008 - Intellon Corporation (Nasdaq: ITLN), a leading provider of HomePlug®-compatible integrated circuits (ICs) for home networking, networked entertainment, Ethernet-over-Coax (EoC) and smart grid applications, announced that new powerline products from Linksys by Cisco (NasdaqGS: CSCO) use Intellon's HomePlug-based ICs to allow consumers to extend their existing wired or wireless network throughout the home leveraging the existing electrical wiring.
With these powerline adapters, any wall socket can be transformed into a network port to connect devices such as game consoles, TVs or computers to the home network. The new space-saving design makes the adapters easy to use and won't hinder the use of the second port of a standard power outlet. Along with the standard adapter that enables one network connection, there will also be an adapter with an integrated four-port switch made available in both HomePlug 1.0 with Turbo (85Mbps) and HomePlug AV (200Mbps) models.
Powerline is a complementary technology to Wi-Fi and is a great solution for homes with heavy steel construction or other radio signal blocking objects. Because powerline technology uses the existing electrical wiring already installed throughout the home, there is no need for drilling holes in walls or installing network cables.
Linksys by Cisco Powerline Turbo products are designed for traffic such as internet browsing, sending and receiving e-mail or connecting a printer to a home network. The faster Powerline AV products - built to the HomePlug AV standard - are optimized for applications that require more bandwidth such as high-definition video streaming or gaming.
Intellon's HomePlug ICs are well established for reliable transport of even full 1080p HDTV content, having been deployed to customers by over 40 service providers to distribute standard and high definition video. These service providers report favorable user experiences in term of the quality of imaging as well as ease of installation, set-up and use.
