WASHINGTON - February 22, 2005 - The United Power Line Council (UPLC) and HomePlug Powerline Alliance signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) last week, establishing an affiliation to "drive the development of open standards" in Broadband over Power Line (BPL) technologies to benefit members of both associations.
"Standard setting is essential for BPL to grow as an industry," said UPLC President/CEO William R. Moroney. "Making sure utilities are included in standards development is a leading priority for the UPLC," he added. "This agreement underlines the importance of standards and our interest in coordinating with BPL standards setting organizations, including the HomePlug Powerline Alliance, in the standards setting process."
Oleg Logvinov, President of the HomePlug Powerline Alliance said, "We look forward to UPLC member participation in our special Power Utility Membership Group as a result of this agreement. The HomePlug Alliance has a proven track record in developing truly interoperable technologies with multi-vendor support; our certification and field tests are the key components of our process. It is important to build on the strengths of both organizations and for utilities to continue to provide broad input in the development of BPL standards."
Under the MOU, UPLC will encourage its members to participate in HomePlug's standards efforts; and HomePlug will offer UPLC members a $1,000 discount off the regular $3,500 utility membership in the HomePlug Alliance.
