KMC Controls Selects Intellon Chipset for First HomePlug-based Programmable Communicating Thermostat (PCT)
- Innovative PCT provides reliable communications from the thermostat to the electric meter using embedded Intellon powerline carrier technology.
Orlando, Fla., August 25, 2009 - Intellon Corporation (Nasdaq: ITLN), a leading provider of HomePlug®-compatible integrated circuits (ICs) for home networking, networked entertainment, Ethernet-over-Coax (EoC) and smart grid applications, announced that KMC Controls, a provider of pneumatic and electronic controls for HVAC, building automation and energy management, is using Intellon's HomePlug powerline communications technology in an innovative programmable communicating thermostat (PCT) device that can communicate with a smart electricity meter with HomePlug powerline capability over existing electrical wiring and 24 VAC control lines in the home.# # #
KMC's PCT is the first to integrate an AMI/Smart Grid interface using HomePlug powerline technology. With this capability, the PCT can perform fast, reliable two-way communications with the home's smart electricity meter or a HomePlug-enabled home gateway, allowing the PCT's display panel to provide utility-related information directly to the consumer, including kilowatt, kilowatt-per-hour, cost and demand response status.
KMC's innovative PCT enables utility customers to monitor the power consumption and energy cost of their HVAC system, which is typically their largest electrical load and therefore the single largest cost in their monthly electricity bills. . If the customer elects to participate in a utility demand response program, the PCT can also allow the utility to periodically de-energize the HVAC system for load shedding, or to adjust the thermostat setting to reduce power consumption during peak electric demand periods.
"PCTs are important to the smart grid infrastructure because they provide a fast link to the home that allows customers to better manage their electricity budgets and utilities to better manage their load demand," said Jim Herdeman, vice president of sales for KMC. "Intellon's HomePlug technology provides high-bandwidth access to the home, allowing rapid, reliable acknowledgement of the load shed activity from the home's PCT in a demand response scenario. Utilities facing brownouts or worse can't wait for time lags seen with narrowband RF solutions to get acknowledgement that they've successfully shed the HVAC loads in possibly hundreds of thousands of homes. There just isn't enough time with today's peak capacity generating constraints."
"With millions of ICs already deployed by service providers around the world, Intellon's HomePlug powerline technology is being increasingly specified for smart grid applications because of its reliable and proven communications capability," said Rick Furtney, president and COO of Intellon Corporation. "We're pleased that KMC selected our HomePlug ICs for their PCTs, another key element in the smart grid build-out."
